My personal experience with wine has been very minimal up
until the last two years. Neither of my parents were wine drinkers so the only
time I ever saw it growing up was if my mom used it to cook with. When I got to
college, the only wine I tried was white wine, specifically Moscato and Pinot Grigio.
I began working at a local Italian restaurant in Blacksburg called Zeppoli’s during fall of my junior year. Since
then, I have increased my knowledge about wine, but I still have a lot to learn,
especially when it comes to red wine.
Even now,
when I go to pick a wine, I almost exclusively choose a white one. I have
decided that Moscato is too sweet for me, and have increased my options by
adding Reisling to my repertoire. I like Reisling because even though some
people see it as interchangeable with Pinot Grigio, I think it is less sweet
and more flavorful. I am most comfortable with my knowledge base on
varietal, white wines.
I want to
learn more about wine during this course because it will help me be more
comfortable with it when I’m in the real world. It will also help me sell more wine
bottles at Zeppoli’s during my last semester. Being able to understand wine
linguistically and culturally will give me a lot more confidence when I’m
ordering wine and buying wine bottles when I’m older and have more money to
invest in good wine. I believe this class will give me a lot of insight and
help me build up my knowledge that will help my assurance with wine down the
road.
